Seven Greek Australians were listed on the Business Review Weekly Rich 200 list, released yesterday, with Adelaide businessman and property developer Con Makris and his family ranking at 45 on the list with their $940 million wealth.
Published for the first time within The Australian Financial Review Magazine’s annual Wealth issue, the list of the wealthiest people in Australia has also seen another six Greek Australians make it to the top 200 – the same number as last year.
Last year, 67-year-old Makris was ranked 40th, but with $40 million less in portfolios he controls.
The barrister who dropped his legal career for prospecting on the goldfields, Kerry Harmanis, kept his position of the second richest Greek Australian this year, rising three spots to 77.
Part of the BRW Rich 200 is also the family of Melbourne -based Harry Stamoulis.
The fortune of the 46-year-old, alongside his family, is estimated to be worth $560 million, up from $480 million last year.
With the Stamoulis fortune originating in the Gold Medal Soft Drink company of his father, the late Spiros Stamoulis, the family now invests in property development.
He also owns Greek media outlets including 3XY radio, TV Hellas and the newspaper Ta Nea. Stamoulis is also involved in soccer and is a director of A-League club Melbourne Victory FC.
Six points down sits Sydney’s Theo Karedis, with $500 million wealth. Karedis is known for his bottle-shop chain Theo’s Liquor that he sold to Coles Myer in 2002 for $175 million.
Since then, with their business Arkadia Property Services, Theo and his son Greg have invested in commercial properties on Australia’s east coast.
On the list were also car dealership owner and property investor Nick Politis, with $410 million; Greek-born George Koukis, the founder of banking software company Temenos with $325 million; and 75-year-old Melbourne based Spyros Alysandratos, the founder of Consolidated Travel, with his $320 million fortune.
The minimum worth to qualify for the BRW Rich list is $250 million.
As expected, reigning on the top of the list is mining magnate Gina Rinehart, with her mind-blowing $20.01 billion.
