Neo-Nazis, secrets and wind-up toy chickens will be just some of the themes in the Greek Film Society of Sydney’s movie event, Festival on the Road.

Each year, the society shows the best of Greece’s premier Short Film Festival in Drama, Northern Greece.

Six award winning Greek short films will be shown at the Cyprus Community Club on May 22.

Best humorous short film award winner, Counting Happiness, by director Venetia Evripiotou is one of the six, which tells the story of a young homeless boy in India selling wind-up toy chickens.

Red Hulk on the other hand follows a young football fanatic falling in with a neo-Nazi group.

Audience participation is encouraged after each movie, with the society starting the debate while asking the crowd for their opinions.

Generator/ Γεννήτρια (19′) The movie portrays a spectrum of people’s reactions to the contemporary Crisis in Greece. A peaceful and hardworking shop-owner facing bankruptcy, wavers between revolution and total defeat.

Nicoleta/ Νικολέτα (19′) With a cinematic aesthetic, the audience is plunged into a child’s ordinary afternoon during the civil war era.

Driving license/ Μαθήματα Οδήγησης (20′) A great performance by Yiorgos Pyrpasopoulos in a competitive relationship between a father and son.

Anna/ Άννα (22′) A filipino maid in a Cypriot household, discovers the sad truth behind an old man’s obsession with a soap opera.

Counting Happiness/ Μετρώντας την ευτυχία (12′) Greek director V. Evripiotou follows a street kid in India and his perception of happiness.

Red Hulk (26′) As Greek as it can get, this movie explores the rise of nationalism in modern Greece in a working class Athenian area. Not many short films say so much in so short a time.

Screenings are open to all and membership is required at the following rates: minimum membership fee (with one-off screening): $5, 3 month membership: $10, 6 month membership: $20, annual membership: $35.

Their next event will the screening of Theo Angelopoulos’ first feature film Reconstruction (1970) on June 19.
