After days of speculation, contract negotiations and contract disputes, West Bromwich Albion and Jason Davidson announced the Australian international had signed with the club on a two year deal, with the option of a third.
The 23-year-old, who featured in all three Socceroos’ games at the World Cup, found himself in a contract dispute with former club, Dutch outfit Heracles Almelo. Davidson was under the belief that he was a free agent, but the club claimed it had taken up the option to extend his contract by a year.
The result of which meant West Brom had to pay an undisclosed amount for him.
Despite the mix-up, Baggies manager Alan Irvine believes Davidson will add a lot of depth to his team, which had already signed six players, including former Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott and Belgian international Sébastien Pocognoli.
“Due to contractual issues with his former club, there’s been a delay in Jason coming,” Baggies manager Alan Irvine told the club website.
“This means he hasn’t trained properly since the World Cup, so he’s going to need a little bit of time to catch up before we can expect him to perform at the levels he’s capable of.
“But he is a good defender who has lots of energy, gets forward well, and will give us competition for places at left-back with Sebastien Pocognoli.”
The Baggies opens their season against Sunderland on August 17.
