A new initiative is being undertaken by the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, as a means to assist Greece in coping with the ongoing refugee crisis that has further worsened the plight of the country.

In his message to all the temples of the Archdiocese, Archbishop Stylianos explains how “our church could not remain indifferent” to the humanitarian crisis challenging our homeland and calls for drastic action, asking churchgoers to offer items of clothing, food and money.

To this end, on Sunday 10 April an offering tray will be passed around among the congregation in all the churches of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, to collect funds for the Archdiocese of Athens’ NGO Apostoli (Mission).

The Archdiocese also urges the congregation to bring clothing and food (especially dry or canned) which will be packed and placed in a container, in order to be sent to three major Athens-based charity organisations: Hatzikyriakio Childcare Institution, Kivotos tou kosmou, and Hamogelo tou paidiou (The Smile of the Child).

Anyone wishing to assist this effort is advised to contact their local church.
