The Lobster, a new film by award-winning Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos, is heading to the 68th Cannes Film Festival in May, Kathimerini reports.
The release is the filmmaker’s first English language movie and is competing in the festival’s main competition section for the Palme d’ Or alongside movies such as Gus Van Sant’s Sea of Trees, Justin Kurzel’s Macbeth, Paolo Sorrentino’s Yout and Joachim Trier’s Louder than Bombs. The festival takes place May 13 to 24.
Starring Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly and Lea Seydoux, The Lobster is set in the near future, when single people are forced to find a partner in 45 days or face being transformed into animals.
A representative of the so-called “weird wave of Greek cinema”, Lanthimos was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language category for Dogtooth in 2011. The director and his longtime collaborator Efthimis Filippou earned the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival in 2013.
