Sydney Olympic will have to put their dreams of becoming NPL champions aside this year after they were bested by grand final opponents Blacktown City on Sunday.

Olympic fell 2-1 to Blacktown City after the score was level 1-1 at the 90 minute mark.

Olympic’s Christos Tomaras scored arguably one of the goals of the season with a volley from distance that ended up in the back of the net at the 79th minute, but sadly wasn’t enough to keep Olympic clear.

It took just two minutes after time for Blacktown to get their second and match winning goal, with IGA NPL NSW Mens 1 Player of the Year Travis Major shooting it expertly past Olympic’s goalkeeper.

Blacktown City will now join seven other state grand finalists to contest the NPL Cup.

Olympic FC in Queensland also failed to get a crucial win to contest the Cup.

They were bested in their grand final on Friday against Palm Beach Sharks.

The Greek sponsored team had an early lead through a Tim Smits’ goal, but by the end of the first half, Palm Beach shot through two goals.

Palm Beach made light of the Olympic defence and shot through another goal close to the 90 minute mark, sealing the fate of the match. Olympic didn’t give up, and scored a late goal to at least keep the match close.

The Queensland team will now take on Northern New South Wales club Weston Workers in the National Premier Leagues Finals Series this weekend.
