The US State Department issued a travel warning for India this week amid concerns over possible terror attacks during the Indian holiday season.

“Recent Indian government advisories and local media report increased indications that terrorists are planning attacks in India,” the alert said.

The State Department added that past terror attacks in the country have targeted public places, such as markets, trains, buses, religious sites, hotels and restaurants. It also noted that, “terrorists specifically targeted hotels and other public places,” in the November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, which killed 166 people.

“US citizens travelling or residing in India are always urged to maintain a heightened awareness,” said the alert, which expires on January 20, 2012.
