Last week saw the establishment of The Hellenic Society at the University of Queensland – the first Greek association of its kind at the university.

A non-profit organisation, the group was created with the vision to develop a network of Greek and Philhellene students, giving them the opportunity to participate in social events where they can freely mix and mingle.

The key players in the founding of the association are president Stephen Kakoniktis, social event organiser Tom Davies, secretary Andrew Mylonas, treasurer James Calokerinos, and sponsorship officer Socrates Aronis.

So far they report an overwhelmingly positive response, with more than 80 student members already signed up.

The first event for the group on the university calendar will be Greek Independence Day later this month on March 25, with sponsorship from AHEPA Queensland, offering to contribute $500.
