Australia’s policy in relation to former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) will remain the same, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop, told Neos Kosmos.
That means that Australia will continue to recognise the neighbouring country by the name FYROM.
Ms Bishop said Australia follows United Nation’s position on FYROM which is also the policy followed by the European Union and NATO.
“It is a matter for Skopje and Athens to resolve the issue of the name,” she said. “But if we re-elected our policy will remain the same.”
Ms Bishop was in Oakleigh to support the Greek Australian Liberal candidate for Chisholm, Julia Banks.
“I am confident that people of Chisholm will recognise in Julia Banks a passionate advocate for this area. She is from the community, she’s engaged in the community, she loves the community and that’s what people are looking for in their representatives. I also believe the Turnbull government’s economic plan to drive economic growth in job security will be appreciated here in Chisholm” Ms Bishop continued.
The Foreign Affairs Minister visited many Greek shops and spoke with the locals.
“I think Oakleigh is the most vibrant, wonderful microcosm of multicultural Australia and Julia Banks is very popular, with her Greek heritage. I had so much fun here today and I really enjoyed spending time with Julia in her electorate”.
