A feature length documentary film about the Battle of Crete entitled Battle Island Crete is seeking pledges and donations to assist the film project to come to fruition.
The collaborators (Ashley Perry, Dr Michael Dunbar and Miklos Janek) – the principals behind the film project – are seeking your support through a Pozible campaign. The film Battle Island Crete will examine the events that took place on the island more than 70 years ago, drawing attention to the under-acknowledged sacrifice of the combatants, from both sides, during this brief and violent episode of the Second World War. The feature length documentary film aims to examine the harrowing events of the battle and to illuminate the courageous actions of the Australian, New Zealand, British and Greek troops during May – June 1941, as well as highlight the valiant role of the Cretan community, both during the conflict and in the aftermath of the battle.
The ‘Battle of Crete’ com-menced after a massive Nazi German airborne invasion on 20 May 1941. A short time later, on 01 June 1941, the Allied forces had been routed and Crete had fallen to the enemy. The defeated Greek, Australian, New Zealand and British troops attempted to abandon the island, in a disorderly withdrawal by sea, yet many failed to escape and were captured.
The occupation of Crete was an incredibly traumatic period for the local population and throughout this time Cretan civilians, along with groups of armed guerrillas, continued to valiantly resist their captors.
