Attracting thousands over the two-day event, organisers ensured there was something for everyone, with more than 30 food stalls and entertainment throughout the weekend.

Master of ceremonies and ambassador to ‘Go Greek’ was the big-haired and fast-talking Effie Stephanidis, who even managed to entice cast members from Summer Bay’s Home & Away, and Queensland’s contestants from House Rules to get into the spirit with a bit of Zorba.

Adding to the community spirit of the festival, committee members decided from this year on to present four awards for outstanding service to the community and contributions to the event’s organisation.

Deputy Premier of Queensland Jackie Trad MP awarded Chris Kazonis for his service to the festival over the years, having served as both president of the Greek Community of St George and chairperson of the festival for 20 years.

Others recognised on the day were John Lazarou; Irini Nicholaides on behalf on her brother Alex Freeleagus, the late Hon. Consul of Greece in Queensland; and the University of Queensland’s Professor Bob Mills.

Also in attendance were a number of official guests, including president of the Greek Community of St George, Michael Anastas; Consul of Greece in Queensland, Jim Raptis OBE; member for Griffith, Terri Butler MP; deputy mayor of Brisbane City Council, Shawn Sandilands and Leader of the Opposition Tim Nicholls MP.
