The Greek Film Society Brisbane aims to bring a year-long program of cinema that relates to Greek diasporic life in a number of genres.

All films have English subtitles and projection is in DVD format. Screenings – that all take place at The Greek Club – are followed by discussion and films are introduced by members or special guest speakers.

The next screening takes place on Wednesday 30 April and will be of the film I Like Hearts Like Mine – Markos Vamvakaris (Μ’ αρέσουν οι καρδιές σαν τη δική μου – Μάρκος Βαμβακάρης), directed by Giorgos Zervas. The film is a portrait of Markos Vamvakaris (1905-1972), one of the greatest creators of Greek rebetiko song. With rare footage, audio, soundtracks and interviews with family and musician friends, the director provides insight into the musician’s personal life and the milieu in which he lived and created. The documentary captures the rebetiko way of life epitomised in Vamvakaris, whose music expresses its harshness and tenderness. The screening will be followed by a special rebetika concert with live bouzoukia.

Upcoming films include: The Four Seasons of the Law, directed by Dimos Avdeliodis; Voyage to Cythera, directed by Theodoros Angelopoulos; Marseilles: a Greek Profile, directed by Marcos Gastine; One Day in August, directed by Constantine Giannaris; Kostas, directed by Paul Cox; What did you do in the war, Thanassi? directed by Dinos Kastouridis; and The Ogre of Athens, directed by Nikos Koundouros. All screenings take place on the last Wednesday of the month at 7.45 pm.

To attend screenings, one must first become a member. Membership and screening subscriptions are as follows: One-year subscription – $30 (students and pensioners $25)
