Cell Block Theatre at the National Art School was the ideal venue to host Rebetiki’s performance of Cell Block Blues last Friday. The old Darlinghurst Gaol set the scene for what was an outstanding performance by Rebetiki.

Revived in a sold out concert for over 200 people, the story behind the music of outcasts, refugees and those struggling on the bottom rungs of society in 1930’s Greece was recounted as each song was introduced with an explanation of its inspiration and meaning “not only did we hear the music but we learnt a bit about the history of the music” said one audience member as he enthusiastically shared his feedback following a standing ovation.

“We knew from the minute this idea was proposed that it would be popular and were not surprised to see it sell-out” said Nia Karteris, Festival Chair.
“The venue could not have been more suited to the theme of this event and it is great to see these ideas come into fruition with outstanding results such as this.”

The performance was put on by the Greek Festival of Sydney, which is proudly presented by Delphi Bank. For more information visit www.greekfestivalofsydney.com.au
