The famous ancient Greek statue Discobolus will be headlining an exclusive exhibition in Bendigo next year, bringing some of the most prized and cherished ancient Greek statues from the British Museum.
One hundred historic pieces featured in The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece exhibition will make it Down Under and will be on show at the Bendigo Art Gallery.
This is another blockbuster exclusive to the gallery, which saw thousands come through the doors to see the Grace Kelly exhibition last year.
The Art Gallery’s director Karen Quinlan said The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece exhibition was a landmark exhibition for the town.
“We are fortunate to have it in Bendigo,” she said.
“There are 100 pieces varying from sculptural, vases and antiquities. It is a wonderful overview of what was happening 2000 years ago in the eyes of a Greek mind.”
The exhibition itself took two years of negotiations and talks to secure, with Victorian Premier Denis Napthine saying it will be great for the State’s economy.
“I think it will be another blockbuster.
“It will be great for the gallery and great for the economy.”
The Premier admitted he is especially keen to see the Discobolus.
“The Discobolus is one of the best-known statues in the world and to have it in Bendigo is just unbelievable.”
The exhibition will be ready by August 2014.
