Next year will see Plato’s play The Apology of Socrates be performed for Australian and New Zealand audiences in March and April. With over 300 performances in 15 different countries, 2014 will be Australia’s turn to see this play performed by renowned artist Yannis Simonides in conjunction with Elliniko Theatro.
The performance is a unique and acclaimed dramatisation of the renowned trial of Socrates, a witty and wise defence of innocence, touching on issues of ethics, justice, virtue, love of life, and hope in death, addressed to the audience as the jurors to judge. It is performed solely by Yannis Simonides, in the role of the great philosopher, as a one act play, in English or Greek, followed by an interactive ‘Socratic’ dialogue between him and the audience on their verdict.
As it stands, the play is currently meeting with educational institutions and members of the Greek community all over Australia to find performance venues, sponsorship and dates and will be announced in the new year.
