Greek Australian journalist Gerry Georgatos has won two multicultural media awards for his work with the newspaper National Indigenous Times. Georgatos won the awards for the categories Coverage of Indigenous Affairs and Investigative Reporting / Writing. His article “People are not the Property of People; The Northern Territory is a Prison built brick by brick by the Commonwealth” won Best Coverage of Indigenous Affairs and the stories and the award for Best Investigative Reporting/Writing was for the two stories “What mining boom? The Kimberley’s homeless rates the worst in the nation – nothing in the budgets to help them” and “Racism; its veils and layers are many”. The journalist first joined the National Indigenous Times after he was head hunted by the editor Stephen Hagan for his advocacy work with indigenous Australians. * Gerry Georgatos spoke to Neos Kosmos this week about his life as a Greek Australian working for an indigenous newspaper, racism and how being a young seven-year-old in Greece at the time of the Junta has impacted him to live a life of social justice and advocacy.
