The Antipodes Festival is showcasing Justice Emilios Kyrou for a special event in September entitled ‘A Conversation with Justice Emilios Kyrou’. In collaboration with the Food for Thought Greek Australian Women’s Network, the event is a chance to hear the author and legal professional talk about the themes of motivation and preserving Greek heritage.
Alongside him will be poet and the wife of the Greek Ambassador to Australia, Eyvah Dafaranos. She will be interviewing Mr Kyrou on his migrant past and his role as the first and only Greek-born Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria.
Justice Kyrou recently published his first book and autobiography, Call Me Emilios. The book provides a window to the many hardships that motivated an entire generation of Greek migrants to succeed in Australian society, while maintaining their Greek heritage. It follows Kyrou’s personal struggle as a young migrant, often being a target of racism and bullying.
The book also considers the enormous impact that Australia, a country Justice Kyrou describes as “one of the few true meritocracies in the world”, has had on his life.
The event will be moderated by Professor Nikos Papastergiadis (University of Melbourne), and Helen Nickas (editor and publisher) who will also contribute their reflections on identity and other themes in the autobiography.
Justice Kyrou was appointed to the Supreme Court of Victoria in 2008 and was the top law graduate in his finishing year at Melbourne University in 1982.
The event is free and bookings are essential. It will be held on September 7, at 6.00 pm at The Wheeler Centre, 176 Lt Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
