Dr Michael Christoforidis will be a part of the Melbourne Russian Festival to give a one-off lecture on The Rite of Spring riot at the premiere of the Stravinsky’s masterpiece 100 years ago.

The Melbourne University senior lecturer in musicology will be delving into one of his favourite research topics, Igor Stravinsky.

The Russian composer is considered to be one of the most influential composers of the 20th century and changed how many composers thought about rhythmic structure.

His composition for the ballet The Rite of Spring was ahead of its time and along with its provocative choreography, caused the audience to riot on its opening night in 1913.

The ballet follows the story of a young girl who is chosen as a sacrificial offering to bring in the Spring and dances herself to death.

Dr Christoforidis will be giving the lecture ‘The Rite Riot’ on Tuesday 13 August at 7.00 pm, in the Stalls Foyer at Hamer Hall, Melbourne. The event is free.
