The residents of Corfu are in shock after the Greek National Cricket Team assistant coach was found to be sexually assaulting a 17-year-old team member, rewarding the boy 20 euros every time.
Based on the evidence found in his home, it is predicted that the adolescent was not the 49-year-old’s only victim.
The Greek Australian was a familiar face in the Corfu community and didn’t raise concerns until now. Parents expressed their distress after it was revealed that a known convicted paedophile was hired by the Cricket Federation as an assistant coach to the under 17s National Cricket team, without checking for a past criminal record.
The Greek Australian was arrested 13 years ago in Los Angeles and sentenced to a year and a day’s imprisonment after travelling from Australia to meet a 13-year-old boy that he had met in an internet chat room called “gaydads4sons”. He soon discovered that the boy was in fact a female FBI agent working undercover.
Following the completion of his jail sentence, he was ordered to serve three years probation and was banned from using social media, contacting anyone under the age of 18 and from loitering around areas frequented by children. Upon being sentenced, he told the judge that he was sorry “this had taken place”.
The sexual abuse of the 17-year-old from Corfu continued for a year and a half and the parents of the boy were aware for some time prior to his arrest. They had contacted the alleged paedophile, requesting he leave their child alone. Once they realised he had no intention of doing so they involved the Police Headquarters of Corfu.
Chief Police Officer Spyros Martinis was in constant communication with the parents. When informed that the boy was at the coach’s home, Martinis organised for his arrest.
Authorities seized evidence including an alarm clock with a hidden camera to record his encounters with victims, three laptops and a desktop computer, a number of hard drives and USB sticks.
