Australia’s Head of State and reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II has – today – bettered her great-great grandmother Queen Victoria’s reign as the longest serving British monarch in the history of the throne.

The previous record was 63 years and 216 days.

Born in 1926, Queen Elizabeth II married Corfu-born Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1947 – who later renounced his titles to become the Duke of Edinburgh under her reign.

She was crowned in June 1953.
