Sun, sand, surf: the summer accessories
Delima Shanti takes a look at all the summer accessories to make a fashion statement on the beach this year
Cover-ups
Advice about staying safe in the sun is all the more reason to throw on a playful cover-up and there are plenty of stylish options for when you decide to dry-off for a while. Sometimes a dress is all you need to take you from the beach to the streets (because the bikini-friendly zones only go so far). A light maxi dress or a flowy kaftan will provide ample coverage on the days when the mercury goes through the roof. Then again, if you're looking to make the most of sun and get those legs nice and tanned, go with a shorter flirty number. Make a beeline for Zimmerman's summer collection, with over 20 years in the business, they know a thing or two about making beautiful and fashion-forward beachwear.
Hats
Fedoras, wide-brimmed, straw hats… there are plenty of ways you can stay stylish whilst staying cool. Floppy wide-brimmed hats are the perfect defence against nasty facial sunburns, while straw hats and fedora are classic pieces your pappou will definitely approve of.
Sunnies
Sunglasses are a summer staple, and some designs are made even more iconic by the people who wear them. Think Jackie O, Audrey Hepburn in the opening scene of Breakfast at Tiffany's, even John Lennon. Most of these classic sunglasses haven't changed much in style, take Ray Ban's Wayfarers for example. But some designers like Karen Walker, have come up their own twists to the classics, making them irresistibly unique. Just remember to take them off when indoor to avoid the mall-rat / Jersey Shore-chic look.
Footwear
Ah, the humble thongs. And we're not talking a certain kind of Brazilian beachwear. This quintessential summer footwear are cheap, practically disposable and for the most part comfortable, but no one in their right mind would call them stylish. But there are plenty of options out there if you're looking for more sturdy and stylish options. Melissa makes cute plastic shoes that are stronger than they look and are great alternatives to sandals. They've got flats, gladiator sandals and even heels that are not just cute, but are also waterproof. Espadrilles are also a classic beach look which originally came all the way from the sunny Pyrenees. Most styles are flat, but if you're going for the wedges, maybe keep them for the pool parties or walks along the pier instead.
Bags
With all the things you're going to carry for a day at the beach, you're going to need a big, sturdy bag to put everything in. A nautical duffle bag is a great utilitarian option that can fit all your beachy needs. They are the go to bag for sailors after all. A great tote bag with a million pockets and compartments will also do the trick, and ASOS has some that are good enough to take out of the beach.
