Golden Dawn member of the Greek Parliament, Elias Kasidiaris, has told Radio 3XY that his Party plans to open an office in Melbourne and a delegation of parliamentarians will be visiting Australia soon.
The radical right party has toyed with opening offices in Australia and around the world, and believes there is demand for them here.
Already, Golden Dawn have reportedly set up a New York office in attempt to reach out to the Greek diaspora and have a New York based website in both Greek and English.
President of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria, Bill Papastergiadis, says he's baffled the party believes they have a following here.
"I'm completely unaware of their significance in Victoria," he tells Neos Kosmos. -
"In a country which prides itself on multiculturalism, its policies don't fit well with the Australian environment, so I don't see its relevance."
The party won a seven per cent minority in the Greek Parliament and has 18 ministers representing the party in Greece. Golden Dawn has become synonymous with racial and homophobic violence and has terrorised Greeks from all walks of life.
Kasidiaris himself grabbed headlines around the world when he attacked Communist Party leader Liana Kanneli live on a morning TV show last year.
Minister for Cultural Affairs and Citizenship, Nick Kotsiras says he cannot fathom why a Greek party can gain popularity with completely contradictory views to that of Greeks everywhere.
"Greeks fought for freedom, and Greeks fought to ensure that our children are able to live in peace and harmony with their neighbours. And for a political party to say the opposite is an insult," he says.
Minister Kotsiras believes the party will fade away over time, and predicts it will be a "one term wonder".
Yet, despite its extremist views, Golden Dawn has gained support from some in the police force. Reports have suggested that instead of breaking up protests, some police officers have stood idle as people are beaten.
Minister Kotsiras says he won't meet with the Golden Dawn ministers when they come to Melbourne and thinks "the best thing is to ignore them".
"Golden dawn's views are not welcome in Victoria. They are irrelevant, misdirected and inappropriate," he says.
On their New York website, Golden Dawn promotes itself as fighting "against altering our racial demographics by the millions of illegal immigrants, and the dissolution of the Greek society promoted by both the coalition parties and the so-called left".

I am saddened that well educated Australians with Greek heritage, like Mr Bill Papastergiadis and Mr Kotsiras, express such naive and uninformed statements in regard to the Golden Dawn movement of Greece. They seem to be parroting the same cliched, demonising accusations levelled against GD by the tri-party government of Greece consisting of the parties of Pasok and New Democracy which are the equivalent of Labour and the Liberals. For over thirty years these two parties have been abusing each other from opposite ends of the political spectrum. Now they have joined forces to surrender Greece to the ECB and IMF. Imagine if that happened in Australia! Throw in the dregs of Karl Marx and Trotskyist accolytes that form the third member of government, that of the Democratic Left, the name of which in itself is an oxymoron, and you come to realise what a traitorous rabble rules in Greece. No one party, or group of political parties, with a three or four year mandate, has the right to sell out a country without, at the minimum, a referendum. It is extremely hypocritical of people who purport to be enlightened by the ideals of Democracy to be calling for the banning of a legitimate political party of Greece. These people seemingly easily dispense with Democratic ideals when legalising the far left Communist Party and outlawing GD, a far right party. Mr Kotsiras should be ashamed of himself for offhandedly and arrogantly stating he will not meet with representatives of GD. Did he find it more rewarding to kowtow to the last couple of Greek government MP's who visited us in Melbourne? By what stretch of the imagination could he justify the differing attitude to equally legitimate MP's of the Greek parliament? I daresay Mr Kotsiras that you are most lacking in Democratic ideals, as the first thing you should have queried was why our last two guests and their parties have not moved to repeal the laws in Greece giving asylum to MP's found to have committed crimes against the state, personally enriching themselves in office and generally corrupting society with their greed. It is unconstitutional to have such laws, but no one in Australia has made this an issue with these fly in fly out politicians, who I believe are very condescending towards us. The only ones to have consistently brought this issue to the forefront in Greece is GD, and that is another reason they are continuously being demonised by the mass media in Greece. Greece is not Australia. You cannot judge Greece and her society against that of Australia. Since liberation in 1821 Greece was a 98% homogeneous society in language, culture and faith. The past forty years have seen the tearing down of this binding fabric by the truly dictatorial rule of the EU undermining and destroying the common ideals of the people whose genesis lies in antiquity. When I go to Greece I want to see Greeks, just as when I go to Italy I want to see Italians and not some caricature clones of American "culture".The only recognisable culture of Australia is Aboriginal, there fore multiculturalism is the manufactured glue that binds us.That's OK for the reality in Australia but not for Greece. What will Mr Papastergiou and the Greek Community he represents do when, and if, all the existing political parties of Greece, except for GD, are successful in their desire to do away with all manner of celebratory parades,(except for Gay parades), that have to do with our Liberation,21 March 1821, and OXI day 28 October. What venue and occassion will he then have to rub shoulders with Mr Kotsiras and his equivalent depending on which party is in power in Victoria at the time. Alternatively the opportunity for local politicians like Mr Kotsiras to garner votes from the Greek community. Seems familiar and similar with the type of clientelle politics that derailed Greece. Please keep your holier than thow hypocracy under control and allow us the right to associate with people who we might not TOTALLY agree with but, none the less, have a right to associate with if we please to, in so far as we identify with their declared vision of the direction Greece should be taking to disengage from the dictatorial monster that is the EU.
No Greek Fascists in Australia. Entry not allowed!
This is an unacceptable situation. We as Hellenes and as members of a multicultural society need to fight GD. Ignoring them is not an option, we need to stand up and fight for democracy and cultural diversity. Fascism is not new to Greece, it was fascists in WWII who in a quisling government accommodated the Nazi Occupiers, it was ordinary Greeks under EAM/ELAS that fought the Nazis, their Greek fascist and royalist allies. We need to fight and represent the multiculturalism among the Greek Australian community. Burying our heads in the sand and hoping that this goes away is not the answer. We need to muster all our legal and community resources, all our community leaders, to push back against these racist Nazis. For those that may dispute that these are Nazis they should examine some of their comments GREECE’S GOLDEN DAWN PARTY NIKOLAOS MICHALOLIAKOS GOLDEN DAWN FOUNDER Nikolaos Michaloliakos, Golden Dawn’s founder appeared to give a Nazi salute in the Athens City Council. He claims that it was merely “the salute of the national youth organization of Ioannis Metaxas.” In May 2012, he told an interviewer that six million did not die in the Nazi Holocaust. He called the figure an exaggeration. “There were no ovens. This is a lie…there were no gas chambers, either” - Nikolaos Michaloliakos See related Youtube: http://youtu.be/yXy7f17GXtQ The Times of London reports that Golden Dawn’s member Artemis Matthaiopoulos, elected MP for the town of Serres, was the front man of the Nazi punk band Pogrom. One of the band’s songs, “Auschwitz” included anti-Semitic lyrics such as “f*** Wiesenthal”, “f*** Anne Frank”, “f*** the whole tribe of Abraham”, “Juden raus” and “The Star of David makes me vomit.” Matthaiopoulos is the second neo-Nazi rocker to represent Golden Dawn in the Greek Parliament. ILIAS KASIDIARIS SPOKESMAN FOR THE GOLDEN DAWN PARTY During a session of the Greek Parliament that was discussing an assault charge against Kasidiaris, he read from the notoriously anti-Semitic “Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion’s” protocol #19. It alleges that Jewish leaders seek to discredit patriots as part of their attempt to take over governments: “In order to destroy the prestige of heroism, we shall send them for trial for theft, murder and every kind of abominable and filthy crime.” - Ilias Kasidiaris This is an evil party and an antidemocratic one - the Australian Government needs to ban them from entry as they do other intolerant parties be they Nazis or Hamas Lambis
