Holden veteran Craig Lowndes continued his mid-season charge in the V8 Supercars championship with victory in Saturday’s 140 kilometre race at Sydney Motorsport Park. The TeamVodafone driver held off a challenge from hometown hero Mark Winterbottom to finish ahead of the Ford driver and claim his fourth win of the year – and third in succession. Ford’s Will Davison, came in third.
Whincup, who had earlier in the day pipped Holden’s Jonathon Webb for his first pole position at Eastern Creek, bogged his start and was quickly passed by all his championship rivals to eventually finish in 23rd spot.
Sunday’s 220 kilometre race was a different story as V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup responded in a powerful driving display around Sydney’s Motorsport Park to take his first ever victory at Eastern Creek from teammate Craig Lowndes second and Mark Winterbottom third, to reclaim his championship series lead by one point.
The next race will be the Sandown 500 enduro event on September 16, the official ‘curtain-raiser’ to the Bathurst 1000 in early October.
