Cyprus born filmmaker and director Michael Cacoyannis has died age 89. He passed away in an Athens hospital of complications from a heart attack.

Cacoyannis directed the classic 1964 Academy Award winning movie Zorba the Greek that starred Anthony Quinn. He also directed the broadway revival of the movie in 1983.

As a director he has won mutliple awards, including Golden Globes and Cannes Film Festival awards and has worked with stars such as Katharine Hepburn, Melina Mercouri, Irene Papas and Tom Courtenay.
