With the start of the new school year 2012, the Greek Education Office in Australia and New Zealand has announced the teaching Greek traditional dancing for all the Greek language teachers in Melbourne Schools and tertiary students of Modern Greek.

The aim of the program to approach the Greek language via the teaching methodology of traditional Greek traditional dancing and traditional Greek songs for all age groups at their learning level (primary to secondary school-VCE). At the end of this course, teachers will be able to teach 25-30 Greek folk dances from all over Greece and to all student levels. Teachers will also be provided with teaching material and resources which will include notes and songs relevant to the dances which have been taught.

The benefits for the students will be that they: will have the opportunity to develop their listening and speaking skills; will learn elements of the Greek culture and come into contact with customs and traditions of Greece; be given the opportunity of kinaesthetic approach; and will experience their lessons in a more enjoyable manner. The course will be taking place at Oakleigh Grammar School on Thursdays.

Each lesson will last one and a half hours and the time will be from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm for the first period and 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm for the second period. Coordinator of the course is the P.E. teacher Christos Monocheir seconded to the Greek Education Office in Australia and New Zealand. Courses will begin on 1 March and there are no fees required.
