An 80-year-old driver has been arrested for driving in the wrong direction along a highway in northern Greece.

The incident took place late on Wednesday, when the elderly driver entered the highway the wrong way near the village of Portaria on the Halkidiki peninsula, and proceeded to drive towards Thessaloniki at up to 100 kilometres an hour.

Concerned motorists informed the police of the dangerous scene, which was the highway close down.

A patrol car was sent to investigate the matter. However, police reported that once they spotted the driver, in their attempt to stop him, he allegedly drove on, coming into slight contact with the side of the police car.

The driver went on the crash into the median barrier, and eventually came to a stop several kilometres ahead.

The man was not injured in the incident, but police did note that he appeared to be suffering from health issues.
