Calling on all poets and short story writers; the Greek Australian Cultural League (GACL) has announced its annual literary competition, and is looking for submissions.

A well-established event on the cultural and literary calendar of the Greek Australian community, it is open to writers living in Australia over the age of 18.

To make the competition more accessible, participants can submit one piece of work in one or both categories, in Greek or English.

The GACL’s aim is to engage with as many writers in the community as possible, so as to create a vast network, while giving them the opportunity to present their unpublished works to a wider audience.

The winning entries in each category and language will receive a certificate, monetary prize, and be published in the 64th issue of the GACL’s annual bilingual periodical ANTIPODES. Submissions awarded second and third will also receive a certificate and books to continue their literary passion.

The results of the competition will be announced at the launch of ANTIPODES at the Panarcadian Association ‘O Kolokotronis’ in North Melbourne on Sunday 7 October.

This year’s event will be a particularly significant one for the periodical, which is celebrating its 45th year of continuous circulation. It will be commemorated with a special edition that will pay tribute to prolific Greek Australian author and poet, Antigone Kefala.

Known for her writing on people who have lost their homes due to the misfortunes of war and displacement, Kefala has been nominated for several prestigious literary government awards, and won the 2016 Judith Wright Award for her most recent poetry collection Fragments.

Aside from the literary competition, both members and non-members of the GACL are encouraged to submit poems, short stories, studies, essays, book reviews and οther literary works in Greek or English, or visual arts for publication in the next ANTIPODES.
