Plans unveiled for a new housing project in Turkey have caused a stir after it was revealed that it will be named after a Greek island: Santorini.

The project by IZKA Construction is officially named Park Yaşam Santorini, in translation Park Life Santorini, and will be located in the town of Izmir overlooking the Aegean.

Occupying 21,000 square metres, there will be 507 apartments and 17 independent houses some of which are said to be inspired by the architecture on the island.

The plans also feature a windmill in the centre of the ‘park’. However many critics have pointed out that despite its name that the mill has more similarities with the landscape of Mykonos or Holland for that matter.

Turkey is not the first country to take inspiration from the popular island; Thailand also has its own Santorini Park located in Cha-am and in operation since May 2012.
