According to data from the European Union’s statistics office Eurostat, the largest group of foreign nationals to obtain Greek citizenship in 2016 were Albanians.

They came out on top with 88 per cent, a significant majority compared to the numbers that followed. Second were Ukrainians with 1.5 per cent, and Russians were not far behind with 1.2 per cent.

That year, in total 33,210 foreigners were given Greek citizenship.

Meanwhile European citizenship is proving to be quite popular, with the numbers on the rise. According to Eurostat, approximately 995,000 individuals obtained citizenship from an EU member state, up from 841,000 in 2015.
