A rodent infestation in cemeteries in the Kalamaria region in Thessaloniki has seen a local prosecutor order a preliminary investigation into the problem following complaints made by the union of funeral homes, ekathimerini.com reports.

There has reportedly been a substantial rise in the number of mice, rats and cockroaches seen in the cemeteries which authorities says is compromising public health.

The Municipality of Kalamaria in the city of Thessaloniki is also the site of the Mikra British Cemetery. It operated from 1917 to 1920 and houses 1,810 Commonwealth graves of  World War 1 and another 147 war graves from other nationalities.
