Optus has allowed SBS to continue to broadcast World Cup soccer matches as the telco grapples with the technical issues that have plagued its streaming of games to its paying customers since last Friday.

Optus chief executive Allen Lew said today that the company “deeply regretted” its poor service that has seen vision freeze during its transmission. It would allow SBS to broadcast all games until the end of the group stage of the tournament.

“We have listened to the feedback from Australian soccer fans,” Lew said.

Customers who paid for the streaming service would now have their $15 fee refunded.

Federal Communications Minister Mitch Fifield said Optus needed to deliver on what it promised after its technical meltdown.
