The Greek Democritus League’s women’s committee hosted an event on Sunday, which saw the launch of a campaign in support of victims of violence.

Held at Democritus House in Northcote in collaboration with City of Brimbank councillor Georgina Papafotiou, she presented the details of the campaign, which is seeking to change legislative law for repeat criminal offenders, introduce harsher penalties, and to review current Intervention Orders.

To show support on the matter, Ms Papafotiou presented a petition, which requires the collection of 10,000 signatures supporting the legislative changes. Once complete, it will be presented to the Legislative Assembly by a Member of Parliament.

During her address, the Brimbank Councillor stressed the importance of victims of violence having the opportunity to have their voices heard, and their needs supported, and called on the community to get on board.

Meanwhile Ms Papafotiou also presented her vision for the establishment of a Violence Crisis Support Centre in the near future, where anyone who finds themselves victimised by any form of violence can seek the help they need.

Also in attendance to show her support for the campaign was Whittlesea councillor, and president of the Municipal Association of Victoria Mary Lialios.
