Greece’s female water polo team will be heading to the European Championship final, after a great performance on Wednesday night that saw them ward off Spain 11-9.

The game started off quite balanced, as Greece took the lead. Spain saw the opportunities to bounce back, however the Greek girls managed to keep the Spaniards at bay after a spectacular second quarter, which saw them score four goals and not concede any.

The third was a tough battle, with both teams scoring four goals each and in the fourth and final quarter, Spain attempted their counterattack, but all they managed to achieve was to reduce the margin of their loss.

This result will take the Greek team to Friday’s final, where they will meet Holland who warded off Hungary by 8-7.

The top scorer for Greece was Eleftheria Plevritou with three goals.

This will be the third European Championship final for the Greek female water polo team, with both previous attempts at the trophy (Zagreb in 2010 and Budapest in 2012) being unsuccessful. The men’s team was not that lucky as they were knocked out quite easily by Spain last week on Tuesday 10-6.
