A renowned Australian plastic surgeon is set to fly to Greece to assist Greek surgeons treating and operating on victims from the tragic fires in Attica.

Dr John Greenwood departs today, and will get to work on Sunday at the Attica General Hospital in Athens.

There he will use a biodegradable skin graft substitution, which was created by a team led by Dr Greenwood together with the CSIRO in 2002 following the Bali bombings.

Made by Melbourne-based company, Polynovo, NovoSorb acts as a dermal tissue scaffold, which allows new dermal cells, blood vessels and skin structures to develop, resulting in soft, supple skin with minimal scarring.

Dr Greenwood has been recognised for this revolutionary and groundbreaking work with the treatment of burns as director of the Adult Burns Unit at Royal Adelaide Hospital, awarded South Australia’s 2016 Australian of the Year award.
