After dominating Brazil last week, Australia’s national women’s football team, the Matildas, were in good spirits on Sunday as they looked to take on the USA in their second game for the Tournament of Nations. They showed this by getting in an early goal by Logarzo in just the 22nd minute of the game.

It was De Vanna’s clever through ball that brought Logarzo alone up against US goalkeeper Naeher and the Aussie striker kept her composure, sending the ball into the lower left corner to open the score. However, Australia weren’t able to create any clear opportunities for the rest of the game and kept their eye mainly on protecting their back line and avoiding any defensive errors.

Just as they thought that they were set for their second straight win against the number one nation in the world, the US grabbed an equaliser literally at the last minute.

A corner kick found Lindsey Horan alone on the far post, who had no trouble sending the ball into the back of the net, ending the game on equal terms for the two teams.

Matilda’s coach, Alen Stajcic felt his team was a little hard-done by the final result, but admitted it was a performance that he and his team could be proud of.

After this result, the Matildas remain in second place in the Tournament of Nations with four points, the same as the US who occupy first place due to a better goal deficit.

Australia’s last game will be up against their Asian rivals Japan on Friday (7.30 am AEST).
