Although Vicky Tsaousis and Argyrios Kikianis were both born in Adelaide and lived only a few streets away from each other, they hadn’t crossed paths until 2012 while holidaying in Greece, their parents’ homeland.

“It is just fascinating to think that although the Greek community in Adelaide is relatively small, Argyrios and I had never met,” says Vicky, who it would seem was destined to meet her husband six years ago in Athens.

“I was enjoying a night out with my sister and brother-in-law when Argyrios, who was also at the same nightclub, heard us chatting away in an Australian accent and came over to introduce himself.

“As we got deeper into the conversation we figured it all out but still couldn’t believe in such a coincidence, to the point where we both took our driver’s licenses out just to prove we were telling the truth,” says Vicky whose family originates from Siatista in Kozani and Sparta.

After that first meeting in Athens, the pair continued on their own separate ways, Argyrios going on to visit Chios, Rhodes and the Peloponnese. But as soon as he returned to Adelaide, he got in touch with Vicky.

The next time the pair were in Greece together, this time as a couple, Argyrios proposed.

“I accepted his proposal and we promised each other that we would have our wedding in Greece to honour the country that brought us together. Our second patrida,” says Vicky.

The couple tied the knot this summer on 9 July on the island of Paros, with a ceremony at the Greek Orthodox Church of Panagia Ekatontapyliani, with 65 guests in attendance from Australia.

The newlyweds also visited other Greek islands before travelling to Italy and Spain to continue their honeymoon.

“Everything was just magical. We feel honoured and blessed to have shared the best day of our lives with our beautiful family and friends. And although we have now well and truly returned to our routine, we are really looking forward to going back to Greece and spending more time at the place where our love was born.”
