Plans to upgrade Oakleigh railway station and its surroundings have been presented for public consultation by the City of Monash council. The main theme behind the designs is to take better advantage of the land to the north and south of the station, to enhance the experience for those arriving to the Oakleigh area by public transport, and to improve connectivity between the trains and the buses all while enforcing the ‘village’ feel that Oakleigh exudes.

In order to accomplish this, the plans propose the removal of the roundabout outside Oakleigh station so that buses can leave faster, along with the integration of an eight-storey building in place of the car park that currently occupies the south part.

If the plans come to pass, there will also be improvements made to the passage underneath the station with lifts, upgraded ramps and new stairs being imported. A pedestrian passage will also be added and the forecourt of the station will be changed to resemble that of Eaton Mall, in an attempt to create a sense of “seamless” transition between the station and the surrounding area and o reduce the asphalt areas, helping to bring in more revenue for local small businesses.
There are also other, smaller upgrades in the designs that were drafted by Global South in association with BKK Architects, advisory firm Charter Keck Cramer and surveyor company Rider Levitt Bucknail.

The proposal will be open for consultation until Monday 8 October. For more information and to have your say, visit https://www.monash.vic.gov.au/About-Us/Council/Have-Your-Say/Oakleigh-Public-Transport-Precinct-Proposal
