Melbourne is a fair distance from Greece, but when an OPEN JAM ‘Καφενειο’ session is underway, you’d be convinced otherwise.

Organised by Anna Vithoulkas in the heart of Northcote each month, the program features a team of interchanging talented musicians who come together to bend and twist Greek musical genres, and the results thus far have been nothing short of inspiring.

“OPEN JAM ‘Καφενειο’ is a truly groundbreaking project that honours Greek musical foundations and legacies while inspiring and creating something entirely new,” Anna told Neos Kosmos.

“Drawing from the styles that Greece is best known for – laika, paradosiaka, rembetika on one hand and indie rock, jazz, reggae, alternative rock on the other, and so much more.”

Following a huge turnout at last month’s event, a new larger venue has been sourced to keep up with demand.

The October line-up has only recently been released, which will see three bands performing on the night, and Anna is particularly excited.

First up on the night will be Greek rock singer Gale Petrou. He has joined forces with the much loved Dimitri Stathopoulos on electric guitar, together with Chris Stathopoulos on drums.

Also performing will be the Awesome Open Jam Crew, featuring Joseph Tsombanopoulos and his gaida beats, Eleni Boukouvala weaving her singing magic, guitarist Alex Kehridakis, and Byron Triandafyllidis.

Finally Giogos Vardakis is back from the shores of Crete bringing his lyra beats, and will be joined by jazz bassist Chris Frangou who will bring the night to an end with their fusion of sound.

“We are very grateful for all the support we have received from both the musicians and our followers, creating a beautiful community of contemporary Greek music lovers,” Anna enthused.

“Get ready to party people!”
