The Liberal National party has vowed to financially support the Greek Presidential Guard to visit Melbourne every year to participate in Greek National Day celebrations if Matthew Guy is elected Premier of Victoria.

The state opposition leader acknowledged that Melbourne is home to hundreds of thousands of people of Greek descent, with a proud heritage.

“A government I lead will work to support the Greek community’s recognition of its history, as well as its ties to Australia, by ensuring the Evzones come to Melbourne every year,” said Mr Guy.

The Greek Presidential Guard is a ceremonial infantry unit that guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Presidential Mansion in the Greek capital.

Since 2016, Evzones have travelled to Australia for the past three years to attend Greek National Day celebrations and ANZAC Day commemorations in Melbourne, Sydney, and Adelaide, each time welcomed with a huge turnout.

“When the Evzones came to Melbourne earlier this year, there was an enormous swell of pride among our Greek community,” said Mr Guy.

“I want to see that continue every year.”
