Police clashed with protesters last Tuesday during a pro-migrant rally in central Athens.

Over 3000 people joined the rally to  protest against government plans to toughen measures to combat illegal immigration.

The demonstrators marched from Omonia to St Panteleimon square.

The demonstrators were objecting to government plans to toughen measures to combat illegal immigration and recent police operations that targeted illegal immigrants.

But clashes erupted, with some protesters lobbing Molotov cocktails at police who responded with tear gas and flash grenades.

The protestors and police battled each other on Odos Patision in the centre of Athens as the clashes escalated.

There were no reports of injuries. A smaller rally also was staged in Thessaloniki.
