After ten consecutive wins, the Hawthorn Spartans suffered their first loss for the season against top four side Richmond Cardinals. Hawthorn paid the price for a poor second quarter kicking only four behinds to 4.1 by Richmond and although the Spartans kept the opposition to three points after half-time they squandered their opportunities through inaccuracy in front of goal kicking 1.5 for the term.

After half-time the Richmond side took advantage of the situation and attacked the ball with hunger, intensity and numbers running out easy winners by 24 points.
