The fate of Greece’s SYRIZA government will be at the centre of a debate due to commence on Wednesday at 12.00 pm sharp (local time), when the Conference of Presidents will start deliberating ahead of a crucial confidence vote.

The governing party lost its explicit majority following Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’ attempts to end the 27-year name dispute with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

The anticipated event was initiated by the PM himself, who, following protocol, revealed that he would be asking parliament to renew its vote of confidence in the government following its collapse.

The proceedings follow the coalition party Independent Greeks’ (ANEL) announcement that it would be withdrawing from the administration, and the resignation of leader and National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos who believes Greece should withdraw from the Prespes Accord.

In the lead up to the vote, Mr Tsipras has continued to defend his deal and efforts to normalise relations with neighbouring FYROM.

Will the Greek government survive the ‘North Macedonia’ crisis?
