It’s been a good-news day for Greece at the Australian Open today, with Maria Sakkari winning the second round in straight sets at Melbourne Park.

The 23-year-old took down her Australian opponent Astra Sharma 6-1, 6-4. The rising Greek star showed plenty of talent, causing Sharma to bow out in the second round.

Sakkari was the favourite to win, after beating Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko on Monday.

She joins fellow Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas who got through to the third round today, after beating his Serbian opponent Viktor Troicki in a hard-fought four sets.

There was plenty of cheering at both matches thanks to a hundred-strong Greek cheer squad.
