Organisers of a protest against the Prespes agreement anticipate that hundreds of thousands of people will gather at Syntagma Square for the 20 January rally.
By 2pm Athens time, droves had already started gathering at the city centre.
More than 3,000 buses arrived filled with protestors from Northern Greece carrying thousands. Greeks of the diaspora – including Australia – have also headed to Athens specifically to join their voices with the crowds objecting to the ratification of the Prespes Agreement that will see the neighbouring country adopting the name “Republic of Northern Macedonia.”
Early in the day, a large banner with the slogan “Politicians Traitors” was erected, whereas another one had the words, “Referendum Now for Macedonia“.
With 60,000 people expected to attend the rally, police were deployed to the city centre and helicopters hovered overhead to monitor the situation.
