Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Yannis Behrakis has died after a long battle with cancer at the age of 58.
His death on 3 March was confirmed by Reuters, his employer since 1987. For the past 30 years, Behrakis has covered events around the world, including conflicts in Afghanistan and Chechnya, the Egyptian uprising, earthquakes and many other stories.
He won a Pulitzer Prize in 2016 for his coverage of the refugee crisis.
He won the respect of his colleagues for his artistic skill and bravery, putting himself on the front line to give the world insight into conflicts and tragedies.
The photojournalist was born in Athens in 1960. He enrolled in a private photography course and worked in a photographic studio in the mid-1980s, however a 1983 movie, “Under Fire”, about a group of reporters working in Nicaragua prior to the 1979 revolution prompted him to take up photojournalism.
He began his career with Reuters as a freelancer in 1987 and was sent on his first foreign mission in 1989 to cover Muanmar Gaddafi’s Libya. He spend the next three decades covering important stories around the world.
