New legislation hopes to improve transparency and lift the shroud of mystery that often surrounds adoption in Greece.

Changes due to take place in April will create an integrated system for adults interested in adoption or providing children with foster care. Prospective parents will be able to log into the integrated platform and submit their request, instead of having to make separate applications to relevant agencies in different cities.

The new system would fast track the adoption process as it would take no longer than 12 months from the first application.

Failed candidates would be eligible to reapply after three years.

At the moment, adoption waiting times in Greece average six years, and this is extremely challenging for those wishing to adopt a child.
