Following the abandonment of Sunday’s anticipated Greek Super League derby between Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, so far eight people have been arrested in connection with the violence, say police.

Video footage of fans clashing with police outside Olympic Stadium in Athens, and attacking officials on the Olympiacos bench, assisted police in making their arrests.

There was signs of tension at the beginning of the game, but things erupted after the 53rd minute, when Miguel Angel Guerrero scored for Olympiacos. A number of Panathinaikos fans proceeded to clash with police.

Chemicals used by police to control the hooligans started to seep into the stadium, and saw referee Marco Fritz make the call to abandon the game entirely on the 70th minute.

The match is expected to be awarded to Olympiacos with a score of 3-0, and Panathinaikos likely to be deducted six points.

All those arrested are expected to be prosecuted, as well as banned from entering stadiums under a new law passed by Deputy Sports Minister Giorgos Vassiliadis.
