Archbishop Stylianos was buried today with fitting respect, pomp and ceremony.
Friends, parishioners and other members of clergy gathered for a funeral service was held at the Cathedral Church of the Annunciation of Our Lady at Redfern. Before that thousands had come to pay their respects as his body lay in repose.
Gladys Berejiklian, acting NSW Labor leader Penny Sharpe, former premier Nick Greiner, immigration minister David Coleman, federal Labor MPs Anthony Albanese and Linda Burney, and Liberal Senator Arthur Sinodinos were among those who attended. There were also representatives from the Russian, Romanian, Serbian and Coptic and Armenian Orthodox churches present.
Following the funeral, he was taken for burial to the Rookwood Cemetery.
The death of the spiritual leader leaves a gap in Australia’s church hierarchy and marks the end of an era for Greek Orthodoxy in Australia.
