The Australian Financial Review released its list of the 200 richest Australians this weekend, with Anthony Pratt and family topping the list for the third year in a row following a brief stint at the top in 2009. The family’s fortune is estimated at $15,572 billion.

Greek Australians topping the list were Sydney-based Australian businessman Nick Politis from Kythera who has an estimated fortune of $1.35 billion dollars, placing him in 55th position in Australia. Mr Politis ran and expanded WFM Motors Pty Ltd from March 1974, rebranding its marketing name as “City Ford” and transforming it into one of the largest Ford dealerships in Australia. The business has been sponsors of the Roosters since 1976, when the club set a new precedent of having major sponsors’ names appearing on their jerseys – making Politis the first sponsor in rugby league.

Next in line is Kostas Makris from Ligourio, Greece. He grew up in Holargos, Athens, and had a difficult childhood that required him to start working at the age of 12, before he moved to Australia in 1963, aged 16, with the goal of making money and returning to his homeland. He worked in the foundry and later bought a string of fast food restaurants before engaging in the property industry. These days he owns shopping malls, Optus House in Adelaide and the Bonnyrigg Plaza on the outskirts of Sydney as well as investments in Greece. His personal wealth is estimated at $1.26 billion.

Melburnian rich lister Spiros Alysandratos came in at 3rd position of Greek Australians on the rich list with a personal wealth of $869 million. Born on the Ionian island of Cephalonia, Mr Alysandratos is the founder of the Consolidated Travel Group, one of the largest travel agencies in the world today.
