A musical life wasn’t an option for Diana Rouvas. But for her, it’s a life that she loves. Music to Diana is everything – nothing has ever come between her and her love of performing, of writing, of singing. She tells me “it’s like breathing – it’s not an option”. A life without music for Diana is unimaginable.
Born and bred in Sydney to a Greek father and Australian mother, hers was a musical family. Both parents were professional singers and singing teachers, Diana began vocal training at the tender age of four and writing her own music at 9. By her early teens, Diana travelled to the US to perform and be involved in the music industry. By 17, Diana joined the multi ARIA award-winning Tina Arena on backing vocals on a tour of France, where she performed to capacity crowds at the legendary Olympia Hall.
To Diana, there was no false hopes about the music industry; it is what it is and she knows this industry inside out. Neither did she have any misconceptions for an industry she lives and breathes.
“I came into this knowing exactly what it was from such a young age so I didn’t expect anything unrealistic,” Diana tells Neos Kosmos.
“If you love what you are doing and you believe you have something to give, you will keep doing it. And you find joy when you are doing that. There’s a lot of joy in music and that’s the gift; even expressing it is a privilege.”
Diana’s gift is her voice, and her art is her music. She’s had her life to hone her craft, to explore her writing, to expand her performance and still she keeps learning.
“I always want to do my best and if people respond well, it’s a big compliment something you strive for,” says Diana.
And the public responded when they saw Diana on television as one of the participants on The Voice. Diana shocked the crowd and wooed the judges with her powerhouse performances of old school funk and classics. And for anyone that saw her performances, they can attest they were nothing short of powerful. As a member of Team Keith (Australian country singer Keith Urban), Diana got the chance to learn about the experiences of a industry stalwart with a long history in music.
“I wanted to do my best in my performances, and that’s all I really worried about,” says Diana about her time on the television show. She said that although with television there is more than the performance itself to worry about, the professional singer took it all in her stride and took one performance at a time and making it to the final four of the Australia wide competition.
But for now, Diana knows that the show is just a stepping stone for her career, a chance for her to make something of the opportunities given to her by the show.
Diana isn’t naive enough to think that fame will just come to her because of the show, neither is she sitting on her laurels. She’s out there making it happen. With a lot going on in the pipelines, Diana promises her fans you haven’t heard the last of her yet.
“I feel strong when I am singing,” Diana confesses, “because that’s where I feel comfortable, that’s where I am at home; where I am free.
“I like the fact that people may or may not see what I am singing; everyone is open to their own perception of what they hear, I don’t want it to be perfect because life and feelings aren’t perfect.”
